The Music of the Night

'Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you'

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent” ― Victor Hugo
I have been fortunate enough to always have music in my life. Even as a baby, my mum used to put me down for naps whilst listening to Classic FM so I have always had the power of music with me.

I am a flautist and it is honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made. I started playing around 9 years ago after wanting to play the clarinet because my mum did. She said that my mouth shape was not right to play the clarinet and the flute was picked out. I'm not the only flautist in my family as both my cousin and my aunt played it as well. I am, however, the only one who still continues playing. I want to spend the rest of my life playing the flute and I can't imagine my life without it. I would love to go to a conservatoire (music college) to study music performance degree - that is my goal at the moment.
I am so grateful to have music in my life - how boring would it be without music? You can get so much from a piece, whether it is a song or whether it is a symphony. Each musician brings something new into the music world, each person has their own interpretation of the piece. I gain so much from performing and being able to share music with an audience. You share something that you have created for the enjoyment of others and for me that is something wonderful.
Performing with an orchestra is completely different from being a soloist, each instrument and each individual part of the orchestra is just as important - no symphony can be created without the help of others.
You create many new friends and meet so many people as a musician. You learn to appreciate each other's performances and ability which inspires you even more. Without music, I wouldn't have met the people I know today. The only reason I met some of my bestest friends is because of orchestra. If it wasn't for music, I wouldn't be where I am and I wouldn't have met the person that helped me get better. I belong to Essex Young People's Orchestra and Essex Youth Symphonic Wind Orchestra - the people you meet are awesome and I'm so grateful to belong to them.
My flute teacher is an inspiration to me. She is deaf and has overcome so many barriers to get where she is today in the music world. She was rejected from the music colleges because she was deaf and even before they heard her play, they decided they wouldn't take her. Then she finally got accepted to The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama - and proved everyone wrong and she played with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Shows that you can do anything you want, if you set your mind to it, have the determination and work for it.
I dread to think what life would be without all the music. It would be so quiet and so boring. Music is the greatest thing invented. Although on paper it can look plain and boring and confusing to some people, when it comes to life it creates something amazing. So many emotions and feelings.
There is music for every mood and it always says more about how you feel than you can say yourself.
It does well and truly "secretly possess you" as the song "The Music of the Night"  says.
